What special precautions should I follow?
Before administering Tylosin:
Tylosin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to tylosin or other macrolide antibiotics.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving the animal.
Additionally, the drug digitalis can potentially interact with tylosin, and alter its effectiveness.
Milk for human consumption must not be taken from a cow during treatment with tylosin.
Discontinue use in cattle 21 days before slaughter, and 14 days for swine.
Do not use in pregnant animal, nor in lactating dairy cattle. A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
Adverse reaction, including shock and death, may result from overdose in baby pigs. Do not attempt injection into pigs weighing less than 25 pounds . It is recommended that tylosin injection 50 mg/ml be used in pigs weighing less than 25 pounds. If tylosin medicated drinking water is used as a follow-up treatment for swine dysentery, the animal should receive feed containing 40 to 100 grams of tylosin per ton for 2 wekkes to assure depletion of tissue residues.
Furthermore, do not mix TylanŽ injection with other injectable solutions as this may cause precipitation of the active ingredients. Importantly, never administer to horses or other equines as injection of tylosin in equines has been fatal.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the product to animals:
People with known hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics should avoid contact with the product. Avoid skin contact. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse abundantly with fresh water. If irritation occurs and persists seek medical advice. Wear protective gloves and a mask when handling the product. Wash hands after use.
Accidental self-injection may give rise to pain. In case of self-injection seek medical advice immediately and show the package insert or the label to the physician.
